Firstly folks, Happy New Year and may your 2018 bring you all you wish for. As usual with this time of year, a lot of us start the ritual of goal setting or making New Year resolutions that we would like to achieve over the next twelve months. We set them with the best of intentions to achieve them however, we would do well if we get to the 1st of February and we are still on track!
I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Maybe we set goals because we are fed up with a certain aspect of our World but not fed up enough to do anything about it. Or, maybe we feel it’s something we have to do this time of year. Do the goals we set have no real emotional connection with us, so the motivation to achieve them isn’t there?
One other reason I feel many people don’t achieve the goals they set is most goal setting posts, blogs, online courses miss a key element of success for achieving goals. They focus so much on the actual goal setting process and not enough on who we need to become in the process. What qualities would you need to display and who you need to consistently “be” in order to achieve your goal?
I first came across this process while working with my own coach and mentor Peter Shaw from Scary and Exciting. He is a master of this process. When you have identified your goal ask yourself, what qualities would a person who would achieve this goal need to display on a consistent basis to succeed? Or, who would I need to “Be” each day? You then write a list of personal qualities you would need to display each day for success. The list should have 15-20 qualities that you can then whittle down to 3 or 4 qualities you can focus on displaying each day. The list could include qualities like, focused, organised, playful, committed, consistent, daring, creative, leadership etc
I really love this process and it has helped me achieve my goals on a much more consistent basis. By focussing on the qualities I need to display I can focus on who I need to “Be”. I found the whole goal setting process a lot more fun and effective for me this way and I’ve become a lot more self-aware on how I operate on a daily basis.
I wish you all the success with your goal setting for 2018 and growing and developing on who need to “Be” to create your success.
