Did You Get the Easter eggs you wanted? There is such a variety of Easter eggs these days you can be easily disappointed with the egg you end up with. Some eggs have our favourite chocolate bars or sweets inside, some eggs are white chocolate, some are dark chocolate, some are plain old milk chocolate. Just for the record cream egg are my favourite Easter eggs and have been for a while.
When I first started courting my now wife, I found it difficult to hide my disappointment when she used to buy me Maltesers Easter eggs despite my hints to the contrary. Eventually after much explaining on how I would be happy to gorge on a large Cream egg Easter egg once a year, she began to get me my Easter egg of choice each year.
I see this problem so often with people in Networking, let me explain. At the many networking events I attend too many business owners or sales people will say they want anyone as a client. On the face if it this would appear to make it easy for people to refer a company to them, when it is actually now more difficult for most people to do this.
The reason being is, the majority of people need to have something more specific to make a connection with in their brain on how they can help. A lack of specificity means a referral request of “anyone who” gets lost in what is going on in a person’s head that day. Thoughts like, what time am I picking my partner up? I’ll have to get that rattling noise in my car looked at. Who did I say I was going to call about that job later? In my story about the Easter egg I thought my wife would know what Easter egg I’d want because of my love for cream eggs. I was wrong as I’d never taken the time to explain this to her. Eventually I got my desired Easter egg when I specifically asked for it!
If we are clear on our target market clients this makes it easier for us to educate our network in identifying who our perfect clients are. My referral sources and referral partners know eggactly (see what I did there?) the type of client I’m looking to work with because I’ve taken the time to educate them in who I’m looking for and how to introduce me to them. Thankfully I’m now surrounded by the business equivalent of my cream egg Easter eggs!
What’s your biggest challenge in educating your network to bring you your best clients on a regular basis?
